A Muslim convert who already was under federal investigation pleaded not guilty Tuesday in what police called a likely «political and religious» attack that killed a young soldier at a military recruiting center.

Abdulhakim Muhammad, 23, of Little Rock, was charged in Monday’s death of Pvt. William Long, 23, of Conway outside an Army-Navy Career Center in a west Little Rock shopping center. He pleaded not guilty to a capital murder charge and was ordered held without bail.

A prosecutor said Muhammad admitted shooting Long and another soldier «because of what they had done to Muslims in the past.»

Young Muhammad, the home grown Jihadi had allegedly been under surveillance by the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force in the South. As he came back from Yemen, a known Al Qaeda training ground, Muhammad should have been intercepted and interrogated, but apparently, wasn’t. If he had purchased his SKS assault rifle, ammo and hand guns from a registered arms dealer, he should have been put through the US Treasury Bureau of Alcohol, Firearms and Tobacco clearance system. Or he could have purchased the weapons and ammo through illegal sources thereby giving him cover. As he professes to be a practicing Muslim, what Mosques did he attend and how radical were the materials and preaching? Further did Muhammad receive ‘refresher training’ at a Jamaat ul Fuqra compound in America? Did investigators uncover more ‘military targets’ in Muhammad’s computer? Is this part of a deadly threat to US military in America by homegrown Jihadis like Muhammad and the NYC Temple bombing plotters?

U.S. counterterrorism officials have authenticated a video by an al Qaeda recruiter threatening to smuggle a biological weapon into the United States via tunnels under the Mexico border, the latest sign of the terrorist group’s determination to stage another mass-casualty attack on the U.S. homeland.

The video aired earlier this year as a recruitment tool makes clear that al Qaeda is looking to exploit weaknesses in U.S. border security and also is willing to ally itself with white militia groups or other anti-government entities interested in carrying out an attack inside the United States, according to counterterrorism officials interviewed by The Washington Times.

I videoen taler Al Qaida-mannen Abdullah al-Nafisi foran en mengde supportere i Bahrain. Han sier:

«Four pounds of anthrax — in a suitcase this big — carried by a fighter through tunnels from Mexico into the U.S. are guaranteed to kill 330,000 Americans within a single hour if it is properly spread in population centers there,» the recruiter said. «What a horrifying idea; 9/11 will be small change in comparison. Am I right? There is no need for airplanes, conspiracies, timings and so on. One person, with the courage to carry 4 pounds of anthrax, will go to the White House lawn, and will spread this ‘confetti’ all over them, and then we’ll do these cries of joy. It will turn into a real celebration.»

«The Americans are afraid that the [weapons of mass destruction] might fall into the hands of ‘terrorist’ organizations like al Qaeda and others,» he told followers. «There is good reason for the Americans’ fears. … [Al Qaeda] had laboratories in north Afghanistan. They have scientists, chemists and nuclear physicists. They are nothing like they are portrayed by these mercenary journalists – backward Bedouins living in caves. No, no, by no means. This kind of talk can fool only naive people. People who follow such things know that al Qaeda has laboratories, just like Hezbollah.»

I was struck by this observation and I thoroughly agree with it. You may recall on December 4, 2008, Yazid Sufaatwas released from a Malaysian prison. Safaat is one of those scientists, who has and may still be working with Al Qaeda. He is a US trained microbiologist who oversaw Al Qaeda’s biological weapons programme and was one of their top anthrax expert. The significance of Sufaat and other microbiologists working with and for Al Qaeda is definitely a concern in terms of Al Qaeda’s future biological weapons capability. Due to US and NATO operations in Afghanistan, Al Qaeda has had to relocate their operations and make use of criminal networks and syndicates in order to exploit funding opportunities. They have moved into Latin America where nations like Venezuela are offering fresh bases. Al-Qaida in the Land of the Islamic Maghreb (AQLIM) is probably one of their strongest affiliates. In January, 2009 there was a plague outbreak in a camp in Algeria that killed 40 insurgents (see a report here). Apparently, US intelligence intercepted a transmission indicating this was a biological weapons project that accidently killed AQLIM members. I think it is entirely possible that Al Qaeda could and would consider routes through Mexico for bringing bio-chemical weapons into the United States. Anthrax, in particular, would be effective and Al Qaeda does have extensive expertise in working on this particular spore. So if they have labs up and running in Latin America then I believe they have the expertise and equipment to mill it up to weapons grade. If transported correctly it would pose a low level risk to the terrorists, which would be of great concern from a threat/risk perspective. Dispersal might be more challenging for them but not the actual transportation of Anthrax spores.
