Russiske krigsskip har blokkert Odessa, og angriper nå Ukrainas største havn med kryssermissiler, hevder analytikere overfor The Times.

The Admiral Essen, the Admiral Makarov and two Kilo-class submarines were named as being the principal vessels involved in the attack. Missiles were fired from the Bastion-P mobile defence system, the think tank claimed.

Angrepene skjedde samtidig som den greske utenriksministeren Nikos Dendias ankom byen med løfter om humanitær hjelp.

Odessa har stor strategisk betydning og har hele tiden vært et mål for de russiske invasjonsstyrkene. Men ukrainsk motstand rundt byen Mykolaiv har forhindret russerne fra å angripe Odessa fra to flanker.

Hvis Odessa faller vil Ukraina nokså raskt miste tilgang til åpen sjø, noe som ville vært en strategisk og økonomisk katastrofe. 70 prosent av all ukrainsk eksport og import går via Svartehavet.

Ukrainian forces have sandbagged the beaches of Odesa against an expected amphibious assault, amid warnings that Russian landing ships have gathered in Sevastopol, Crimea, in preparation for an attack.

The Centre for Defence Strategies said that Russian units had been working behind enemy lines along the coast south of Odesa to reconnoitre and sabotage Ukrainian positions.

Ukrainas viktigste våpen mot krigsskip er Neptune, missiler spesielt beregnet på å ramme krigsskip. Boris Johnson har bedt om at britene sender flere slike våpen til Ukraina.

Ellers virker russerne nå å konsentrere seg om Donbas/Luhansk-regionen i øst, ifølge britisk etterretning.

“Russian forces are continuing to consolidate and reorganise as they refocus their offensive into the Donbas region in the east of Ukraine,” the MoD said. “Russian troops, including mercenaries from the Russian state-linked Wagner private military company, are being moved into the area.”

The city of Izyum, where Ukrainian forces are resisting the Russian advance, has become a crucial battleground in the struggle for Donbas. The city is now 80 per cent destroyed, according to local officials, and 15,000 to 20,000 civilians remain trapped in the town.
