May trekker støtten til innenriksminister Javid i jihadist-utlevering til USA

Statsminister Theresa May fikk kalde føtter og trekker støtten hun har gitt innenriksminister Sajid Javid som vil utlevere to IS-bødler til USA, hvor de risikerer enten dødsstraff eller Guantanamo.

Theresa May has refused to endorse Sajid Javid’s position on the death penalty despite admitting she knew about a letter sent to the US which paves the way for two members of the «Beatles» group of Isil terrorists to be sent to America.

Mays opptreden kalles å falle en kollega i ryggen. Hun gjør Javids posisjon utålelig. May har kjent til Javids avgjørelse og brev til justisminister Sessions. Utleveringen ble kjent i dag gjennom Telegraph. Når saken blir kjent velger May å distansere seg fra sin egen statsråd.

Det er uhørt.

But Downing Street said the UK’s “long-standing position” was to “oppose the death penalty in all circumstances as a matter of principle” and failed to say whether Mrs May supported the decision.

Asked directly if Mrs May backed the move, the Prime Minister’s spokesman said: “Everybody agrees that these men should face justice through a criminal prosecution.”

Downing Street said the Prime Minister had been aware of the letter, sent to Jeff Sessions, the US attorney general, but would not say exactly when it was shared with her.

Som om May ikke har nok problemer. Man undres over hennes lederegensakper når hun slår bena under sin egen statsråd. Javid driver ikke privatpraksis som statsråd. Han handler på vegne av regjeringen.

Javid skrev til Sessions at han ikke så noen grunn til å be om garantier for at det ikke ville bli idømt dødsstraff i denne saken.

«I am of the view that there are strong reasons for not requiring a death penalty assurance in this specific case, so no such assurances will be sought,» Mr Javid wrote, in the letter dated June 22 2018.

Ikke bare May, men også Boris Johnson må score poeng på å distansere seg fra denne modige avgjørelsen.
