Samlet ankom 503.000 innvandrere Storbritannia i 2009, hvorav 270.000 kom utenfra EU.

The ONS named ten towns and cities across southern England where the pressure of immigration, rising birth rates fuelled by the new arrivals and the longer life expectancies of older people will bring the fastest increase in numbers. Bristol and the district of North Somerset to its south will grow by nearly 100,000 in the next eight years.

And while the greatest population increases will be in East Anglia, the Hertfordshire commuter heartlands of Welwyn and Hatfield will see a further 18,000 people arrive, a rise of 16.1 per cent.

The rapid population increases point to the scale of the immigration challenge facing ministers.

More than half a million immigrants a year are coming into the country, figures showed, and immigration over the 12 months to September added 142,000 to the population.

A total of 503,000 new immigrants arrived, 270,000 of whom were from outside the EU.

The number of people awarded citizenship rose to 203,790 in 2009, up 50 per cent on the previous year.

Predictions of how individual towns and cities will see their numbers grow were drawn up by the ONS based on figures estimated in 2008.

The estimates, which say the national population will hit 70million in 2029, take into account the areas that draw in the most migrants and those with the highest populations of older people.

Befolkningen i denne regionen vil øke med 10 prosent – over 500.000 nye innbyggere – innen 2018.

The smallest increases will be in the North East and the North West, where numbers will grow by fewer than 350,000.

Nearly 3.8million extra people will bring the population of England to more than 55million by 2018, the projections said.

The predictions and fresh immigration figures brought renewed promises from ministers to cut immigration.

Immigration minister Damian Green said: ‘These figures illustrate the scale of the immigration challenge facing the new government. It is now our duty to control immigration for the benefit of the UK and that is what I am determinedto do. I believe that immigration has been far too high in recent years, which is why we will reduce net migration back down to the levels of the 1990s – to tens of thousands rather than hundreds of thousands.

He said a wide range of new measure would be introduced including a limit on work permits and more effective regulation of students from abroad.

Sir Andrew Green, of Migrationwatch, also pointed to growing numbers of migrants granted the right to remain in Britain permanently.

He said :’The rate of settlement grants has doubled in three years. This is the legacy of the mass immigration encouraged by the previous government. The new government must get a grip of immigration without delay.’
