The BBC’s Frances Harrison in Tehran says this is not the first time Iran has test-fired its improved version of the Shahab-3 missile, but the timing is interesting.
She says the message seems to be one of defiance – that Iran is militarily strong and cannot be bullied by the international community.
The missile’s increased range would put Israel within its sights, our correspondent notes.
