For the record: Gazprom har kjøpt seg opp til kontroll med Izvestija: Commentators immediately interpreted the deal as a further strengthening of government control of the media, which has seen many of its initial post-Soviet freedoms curtailed during President Vladimir Putin’s five years in power.

Gazprom, which controls 20 percent of the world’s natural gas reserves, already owns the NTV television channel and Echo Moscow radio station.
The purchase of NTV in 2001 was followed by the exit of many of its leading journalists and a dramatic muting of its famously critical coverage, particularly of the war in Chechnya.
However, a deal reached with journalists at Echo Moscow has so far ensured that the station retains a rare level of independence for Russian broadcast media.(reuters)
