The Moscow Times quoted unnamed officials as saying they suspected called Pavel Pechyonkin, a former ambulance paramedic, who left home in the Volga region of Mari El to join militants in Dagestan and changed his name to Ansar ar-Rusi.

Mr Pechyonkin’s parents, Nikolai and Fanaziya, made a video in March, appealing to their son to give up his jihad and come home.

He turned them down in a video reply, after which they travelled to Dagestan in September but failed to find him.

“I am not inventing anything from the Koran; I am reading it,” he said. “Why should we follow those Christian commandments, when Allah – all glory to him – urges us to fight those kafirs [unbelievers]? Why shouldn’t we leave their children orphaned?”
