Sharon bruker ordet okkupasjon: Ariel Sharon har for første gang brukt uttrykket «okkupasjon» om Vestbredden og Gaza. Fire ganger faktisk. Bosetterbevegelsen og høyresiden er sjokkert. Selv sier han dagen derpå at han mente at palestinerne er okkuperte, men ikke territoriene. Men det blir semantikk. Alle er enig om at det er av stor symbolsk betydning at Ariel Sharon har brukt venstresidens betegnelse, noe som har vært tabu for høyresiden. Til nå.

Dette er nok et bevis på hvor dårlig jobb NRKs utsendte Lars Sigurd Sunnanå gjør. Sunnanå dømte som kjent veiplanen for fred nord og ned. Den var uten håp, det samme var statsminister Mohammed Abbas. Sunnanås logikk passer forbløffende med Hamas’. Jeg har registrert innlegg på nettet hvor det påpekes at Sunnanå bruker NRK til å fremføre sine private synspunkter. Kringkastingsrådet er ikke lenger noen kritisk instans. Det var kanskje en idé å skrive et klagebrev til Rådet og komme med noen eksempler på Sunnanås ensidighet. Han tilla det heller ingen betydning at et flertall av regjeringen stemte for opprettelsen av en palestinsk stat. Dette er to viktige begivenheter på kort tid. Den tredje er utsikten til at Abbas får Hamas til å gå med på våpenhvile.

But last Monday, a day after his government reluctantly backed the peace plan, Mr. Sharon told angry legislators from Likud: «You may not like the word, but what’s happening is occupation. Holding 3.5 million Palestinians under occupation is a bad thing for Israel, for the Palestinians and for the Israeli economy.»

A careful man, he used the word occupation — in Hebrew, kibush — at least four times.

They definitely did not like the word. Mr. Sharon was attacked as undermining his own government’s effort to label the territories as «disputed,» rather than «occupied.» The next day, he said his mission was not to parrot everything he said in the past. But he also said that what he had meant was that the Palestinians were occupied, but that the territory was not — a formula that appeared to satisfy no one.

«Whether he wanted to or not, Sharon broke a huge taboo, and no murky clarification can get him out of it,» the columnist Amnon Dankner wrote today in the Israeli daily Maariv. «He used the terminology of the left, and thus also adopted the basic outlook of the left, which has been arguing for many years that we are occupiers in the territories, that occupation is a bad idea and in fact mortally harmful to Israel.»
