Britisk anti-terrorpoliti har arrestert fem menn av arabisk opprinnelse etter opplysninger om at de planla å angripe pave Benedict XVI under hans besøk i Storbritannia:

Police arrested five men in a dawn raid today after receiving information they were plotting to harm the Pope.

The suspects were arrested by Scotland Yard at 5.45am at business premises in the centre of London and are now being questioned by counter-terror detectives.

Searches are underway at properties across the capital but schedule in the city is currently continuing as planned.

Ingen av de fem mennene har britisk statsborgerskap, og skal være fra Algerie. Politiet mottok torsdag kveld et tips om at et terrorangrep skulle finne sted under pavens besøk i Storbritannia.

De anholdtes alder er 26, 27, 36, 40 og 45. De mistænkes for at «forberede og iværksætte en terrorhandling».

Det vides ikke, om den planlagte terrorhandling var rettet direkte mod paven.

Politiet har under ransagninger ikke fundet sprængemner eller andet farligt materiale.
