Kim Jong-nam (Chosŏn’gŭl: 김정남; Hanja: 金正男; 10 May 1971 – 13 February 2017) was the eldest son of Kim Jong-il, former leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. From roughly 1994 to 2001, he was considered to be the heir apparent to his father and the next leader of North Korea.[1] Following a much-publicized botched attempt to secretly enter Japan using a fake passport and visit Tokyo Disneyland in May 2001, he was thought to have fallen out of favor with his father.[2]

From at least 2003 onwards, Kim Jong-nam lived in exile outside North Korea. His younger paternal half-brother Kim Jong-un was named heir apparent in September 2010.[3] In exile, Jong-nam became known as an occasional critic of his family’s regime and an advocate for reform.[4] Kim Jong-nam was reported to have been killed in Malaysia on 13 February 2017
