KINSHASA, July 11 – Rwandan rebels killed 26 women and children in a raid on a village in eastern Congo, burning young mothers alive in their huts in one of the worst massacres in the area for months, a medical charity said on Monday.
A Congolese government official quoted rebels as putting the death toll at 76 from the attack, saying it was carried out on Saturday to punish villagers for supporting U.N. troops seeking to expand their presence in the country’s South Kivu province.
The U.N. mission in Democratic Republic of Congo said it had sent peacekeeping forces by helicopter to verify reports of the killings in the village of Mtulumamba, which lies outside the town of Bukavu in lawless South Kivu.(reuters)
