Up to 1,000 members of the Palestinian security forces were moving into the northern Gaza Strip yesterday after an agreement was reached with Israel, raising hopes of long-term co-operation between the two sides.

The force, which will later rise to 2,500, will take over cities and towns in the territory and occupy positions close to sites where militants have routinely launched rockets into Israel, Palestinian officials said.
