LONDON, Sept 3 – Mosques in Britain will attract twice as many faithful as churches by 2040, according to a study on the future of religious belief carried out by the British-based association Christian Research.
The study estimated that the proportion of British nationals describing themselves as Christian in recent official surveys would go down from 72 percent to 35 percent. The number of British nationals attending parish churches was expected to slump from 9.4 percent today to five percent in 35 years time.
The average age of congregations in Catholic and Protestant churches is expected to rise to 64.
Dwindling congregations are expected to result in the closure of around 18,000 parishes by 2040, the study said.(afp)
