Shortly before the state of alert was implemented, five members of the Palestinian militant group Hamas who were preparing to fire mortars toward Israel were shot and wounded by Palestinian police, witnesses and medical sources said.
Two passers-by, who were not members of Hamas, were also wounded by the shots.
During a press conference in Gaza Hamas’ armed branch, the Ezzedin Al-Qassam Brigades, warned the Palestinian Authority that opening fire on people was a «yellow line which cannot be neglected by the Brigades».
The Brigades «will react to all attacks by the Zionist enemy,» a spokesman for the radical group added, speaking on condition of anonymity and accusing the Palestinian Authority of seeking «to destroy national unity».
