Sveitsiske Carla del Ponte gir seg etter åtte år som sjefsanklager for Krigsforbyterdomstolen for det tidligere Jugoslavia. Domstolen skal egentlig legge inn årene i 2010, men del Ponte ber Sikkerhetsrådet fornye mandatet inntil Radovan Karadzic og Ratko Mladic er tatt.
«I hope and I believe that the Security Council will make the right decision and not close this tribunal before those two are brought to justice,» Del Ponte said in her final news conference at the tribunal. The Swiss lawyer will become her country’s ambassador in Argentina after she leaves the tribunal in January.
Del Ponte reagerte på at tiltalte får utspørre vitnene, som ofte er ofre. Hun synes også det ikke hører hjemme noe sted at de tiltalte får reise hjem i helgene.
She appealed for an end to allowing war crimes suspects to cross examine victims, saying only the presiding judge and defense attorneys should question victims.
«Victims should not be victimized again by this very harsh process,» she said.
Del Ponte criticized judges for allowing suspects to return home during holidays to visit their families.
«We currently have 12 accused on provisional release … and neither I nor the victims can understand why,» Del Ponte said.
Hennes arvtaker er Serge Brammertz, som var sjefetterforsker for drapet på Libanons tidligere statsminister Rafik Hariri.
