Bevisene antar solide dimensjoner. Med sitt videotapede budskap har al-Qaidas militære talsmann i Europa gjort krav på M11, som er vanskelig å se bort fra. Videokassetten tyder på at al-Qaida har et solid nærvær i Spania, som flere terrorforskere har sagt. I samme retning peker funnet av mobiltelefonen og arrestasjonene.

En al-Qaida-utsending som skulle rekruttere islamister i Europa til oppdrag i Irak, ble arrestert i Spania i fjor sommer, men løslatt, før han ble arrestert igjen i Hamburg i november.

‘Al-Qaeda searches for those with a soft belly and weak spots and this is what allowed sleeper cells to spread within the country,’ sier Boaz Ganor, leder for International Policy Institute for Counter-Terrorism i Herzliya, Israel.
