Anders Ulstein Den britiske forsvarsministeren uttaler til The Times og Daily Telegraph (18. februar) at Russland utgjør en klar trussel mot de baltiske land. Forsvarsminister Michael Fallon mener Putin utgjør en like stor trussel mot Europa som Den islamske staten.
Using some of the toughest language of any senior British minister towards Russia since the crisis over Ukraine erupted a year ago, Mr Fallon added that Latvia, Lithuania or Estonia could be in the firing line.
Trusselen er “real and present” for de baltiske land, men Nato er klar til å reagere på den minst tegn på russisk aggresjon, advarer han. Forsvarsministeren advarer spesielt mot russiske forsøk på å undergrave landene før de eventuelt griper inn militært, slik vi har sett i Ukraina.
A murky campaign of infiltration, propaganda, undercover forces and cyber attack such as that used in the early stages of the Ukraine conflict could be used to inflame ethnic tensions in Estonia, Lithuania or Latvia, he said.

Russland har de siste årene økt den militære aktiviteten i baltisk luftrom. Fallon peker også på den kraftige økningen i russisk militær flyvninger i internasjonalt luftrom og den kraftige økningen i Russlands opprustning. Det er klart at Russland med dette tester Nato og hvordan vi responderer. Dette gjør at Europa bør være spesielt bekymret for hva som kan skje i Baltikum.
«There are lots of worries. I’m worried about Putin. There’s no effective control of the border, I’m worried about his pressure on the Baltics, the way he is testing Nato, the submarines and aircraft.”
