Channel Seven reporter Paul Dowsley told 3AW radio the network’s newsroom was called by a man claiming to be linked to the hostage situation.

«My colleague could hear a woman screaming in the background and the male caller told my colleague ‘This is for IS, this is for Al Qaeda’,» Dowsley told Ross Greenwood’s Money News program.

Dowsley said the call «chilled the receptionist to the bone» and «stopped her in her tracks».

«(The caller) seemed very firm and the woman in the background was clearly distressed.»

Authorities were called to the serviced apartment building on Bay Street in Brighton at 4pm after receiving reports of an explosion.

«A short time later a phone call was made to Triple Zero stating there was a hostage situation,» Deputy Commissioner Andrew Crisp told reporters at the scene.

Authorities said the gunman held a woman hostage inside the apartment building for at least two hours before he exited the unit and fired at police.

«Just before 6pm, a male has exited one of the serviced apartments and began firing at police members,» Dep. Comm. Crisp said.

«Police members returned fire and as a result of that fire, the man who exited the serviced apartment was fatally shot.»

The Herald Sun skriver at gisseltakeren var kjent for antiterrorpolitiet:

The Herald Sun has reported the suspect was known to counter-terrorism police, although Dep. Comm. Crisp said they have not yet been able to identify him.
