«We can confirm that we have discovered and dismantled a veritable ‘school of terrorism’ that is part of a system of terror operated by small autonomous cells,» top anti-terror officer Carlo De Stefano said, according to the ANSA news agency.

Investigators told ANSA the four men were suspected of belonging to a group linked to Al-Qaeda and were «training with a view to carrying out terrorist attacks.»

Investigators told ANSA the arrested men had handled weapons, explosives and toxic material and had trained others.

The suspects had used the Internet to download instructions on handling weapons, sending coded messages and on how to fly a Boeing 747 passenger jet.

Several different chemicals used to make explosives, such as acids and nitrates, were seized as part of the probe which included some 20 raids in various parts of the country.
