En gruppe intellektuelle i Najaf har skrevet et åpent brev der de beskriver hvordan tilhengere av Moqtada al-Sadr jaget den hjemvendte ayatollah Khoei gjennom Najafs gater og drepte ham og lemlestet liket i april ifjor.

NRK har konsekvent omtalt ayatollah Khoei, som «den amerikanskstøttede», på en måte som er ensbetydende med «kollaboratør», som NRK også bruker flittig.

Khoei var en meget avholdt ayatollah. Han kommer fra en av de mest aktede familiene innen shia-samfunnet, og faren var læremester for den nåværende storayatollahen Sistani.

But the senior clerics are quietly trying to sway opinion against Sadr. An anonymous group calling itself «Najaf’s intellectuals» wrote and distributed a flier in the holy city last week that described how a mob of Sadr’s followers chased Khoei to Sadr’s door last April, then stabbed the cleric over and over before dragging his body through the streets to be mutilated.

On Saturday, the Hawza put out a statement in Iraqi newspapers urging the Mahdi Army to take its fight outside Najaf and warning the occupation forces not to invade.

«It’s your responsibility to keep Najaf safe, so don’t cause any bloodshed,» the Hawza said in its written plea to the Mahdi Army on Saturday. «If you reject our advice and decide to fight, then go outside the city, where there are no people and no buildings. Don’t make innocents suffer the outcome of your wrongful decision.»

Artikkelen er ellers et nedslående eksempel på at vold lønner seg. Det var de lærde aytollahene som måtte komme til Sadr for å forhandle, ikke omvendt.
