– Iran announced on Tuesday it was replacing its ambassador to London, seen as a reformer who sought closer ties with the West.
The official IRNA news agency said Mohammad Hossein Adeli had asked for retirement, but gave no reason. He had been in his London posting just over a year.
Some Iranian newspapers have said a mass reorganisation of Iran’s diplomatic corps was being undertaken by new President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Adeli’s «retirement request has been approved and his term as ambassador has ended,» IRNA said, quoting a statement by the Iranian embassy in London.
«In the coming weeks, after saying goodbye to British officials, he will come back to Iran,» it added.
Other senior Iranian diplomats said to be part of the shake-up include the ambassadors to France, Germany and Geneva, Iran’s reformist Aftab-e Yazd and Shargh newspapers have reported.
Those affected include many of those who were closely involved under previous President Mohammad Khatami in Iran’s negotiations with the European Union over its nuclear programme.(reuters)
