… Adrian, 40, from Wroclaw, has just started claiming Jobseekers Allowance after more than five years working as a self-employed van driver. He says he was driven out of business by more recent arrivals from Bulgaria and Romania undercutting his rates.

“There is more competition for jobs among people who come here now, than when I first arrived,” he said. “I want to work again as soon as I can, because the £70 a week I get is hard to live on in London and I cannot apply for housing benefit because my landlord does not want to declare his earnings.”

“Some are not declared by their employers, others claim benefits, but at the same time work cash in hand,” he said. “They are fiddling the system and I don’t agree with that because it is taking money from other people. But it does happen.”
