En menneskerettsgruppe har funnet ut at 414 kvinner ble drept i Tyrkia i 2015, enten fordi de ville ut av ekteskapet eller under arrangerte «selvmord» forbundet med æresdrap.
Antallet drepte er høyeste i vest, i Istanbul og Izmir og her regner man det er snakk om ektemenn som dreper koner som vil ut av ekteskapet. I øst er det mer «selvmord», jenter som blir drept av æresgrunner.
Det er grunn til å anta at mørketallene er store.
Umut Vakfı prepared a map to reveal the prevalence of violence against women according to which 414 women, 309 of whom were killed by guns, died in incidents of violence across Turkey during 2015. Among those slain were infants and an 85-year-old woman.
İstanbul has the dubious honor of being the city where the most women were killed during 2015. According to the map, 35 women were killed and six were injured in İstanbul in 2015.
İzmir was the second city with the most murders of women in Turkey, according to the map. Seventeen women were killed and seven were injured in İzmir during 2015. İzmir was followed by the southeastern city of Gaziantep, where 15 women were killed, then the southeastern city of Diyarbakır, with 13, and the western city of Kocaeli and southern city of Mersin tied, with 11 women being killed in those cities.
