I departed my Arizona campsite in the mountains on US 191. It is a very winding road through the San Francisco mountains. On the openings through the tall Ponderosa pines the views were incredible with mountains stretching as far as I could see to the west. There were numerous signs warning vehicles over 40 feet to turn around! Speed limits as low as 15 mph were indicative of hairpin turns and steep descents of up to 12 degrees or more. I wanted scenic roads without much traffic, but this was almost too much. It would be a nice drive in a car, but towing a trailer for 90 miles was more stress than I needed.
At the southern end I passed a very large open pit Phelps-Dodge copper mine. It looked like they completely eliminated about 3 mountains. It was started in 1937, so that may be the case. The scale of the excavation was amazing. I’ll attach a picture.
