Det Sgt Simon Morgan, who is heading the murder investigation, revealed yesterday that the imposition of curfews was «an option being considered» in an attempt to tackle the mounting violence.

«There is a lot being done at the moment,» he said. «It really does come down to guidance from adults and parents who need to know what youngsters are doing and where they are going.»

Glenn Tainio, 44, a former police officer, said the gangs had baseball bats and chains. «It looked like it was an organised fight. I have never seen anything like that in England. I am a former police officer so I have seen gang violence, but I was too scared to go out there. I think if I had gone out there, I would have been killed.»

Seniz Yersever, 40, a neighbour, described how a «blood-thirsty lynch mob» descended on the victim and stabbed him outside her door in Southend Road, before he staggered along for about 50 yards and fell to the ground. Mrs Yersever said: «I heard a screaming mob outside my house and when I looked outside they were throwing bricks at each other from inside my driveway. I shouted to my husband to call the police because it was clear something horrendous was happening.

«What I saw was like a blood-thirsty lynch mob attacking a fearful young lad. They were making animalistic noises. It was terrifying. I could not identify any of the mob because they all had hoods on, some with towels over their heads.»
