Alexander Pleshkov, head of the punishment implementation department for Siberia, told Interfax news agency the tycoon had been sent to a colony in the Krasnokamensk district of Chita province, close to the Chinese border, and placed in quarantine for two weeks for medical checks.
«The quarantine will last two weeks. After that Mikhail Khodorkovsky will be assigned work,» Pleshkov said.

Some analysts said the choice of a remote penal colony in Siberia was politically motivated.
«The authorities have done everything possible to obstruct contact between the detainees and the political world, to isolate them,» commented Yury Korgonyuk of the Indem Foundation policy think tank in Moscow.
«In Moscow, they could still see their lawyers regularly, people could picket» outside the prison to protest, he said. «But in Siberia, there’s hardly any place to accommodate the lawyers, let alone picketers. The authorities are continuing to try to break their morale.»(afp)
