Det er fordi Human Rights Act har utpekt dem til en «beskyttet minoritet». De konservative ønsker å avskaffe loven og erstatte den med en Bill of Rights, men snakker ikke om det i valgkampen.

Speak up for justice

As villagers in Meriden, Warwickshire, unite in fury over the eyesore of an illegal gipsy camp, it’s not only their unwelcome visitors they’re up against.

They’re also having to contend with the perversity of Labour’s disastrous human rights laws.

For newly-released planning guidelines from the Government insist that the rights of travellers should take precedence over residents’ concerns.

Incredibly, the rules lay down that gipsies – already given priority admission to popular schools and the right to jump NHS queues – can even build caravan sites on green-belt land where no other development is allowed.

And why? Because they belong to a protected ethnic minority whose members may ‘suffer aversion to bricks and mortar’.

Truly, no law flies in the face of fairness and simple common sense so outrageously as the Human Rights Act, from which so many injustices spring.

To their credit, the Tories have pledged to scrap the HRA and replace it with a British Bill of Rights.

But why have we heard barely a squeak about what should be a hugely popular policy during their campaign? Don’t they want to win?
