The British people must not be given a say on whether to leave the European Union because it is a ‘lottery’ which way they will vote, Lord Mandelson claimed today.

The former Labour Cabinet minister said Britain’s EU membership is ‘absolutely fundamental’ and must not be put ‘in the hands’ of an unpredictable referendum.

Lord Mandelson vet best. La ikke velgerne få slippe til!

Utdrag fra debatten:

11.25 Lord Mandelson, the former EU commissioner, says Cameron has been «taken hostage by the militant tendency» of the Tory party.

He said: «We need to concentrate on using all of our influence and energy in building up Britain’s influence in Europe, not driving Britain out of Europe.

«My message to the Government is stop grandstanding to the Ukip gathering. If you are really serious about European reform, you have to go out and work for it and join with others in achieving it.
