The head of the group, Zarema Sadulayeva, and her husband, Alik Djabrailov, were seized from their office in Grozny, the Chechen capital, by men on Monday afternoon, some dressed in black uniforms and some in civilian clothes, officials said.
Their bodies were discovered early Tuesday in the trunk of their car in Grozny. Both were said to be in their 30’s.
Human rights activists said on Tuesday that they were bewildered by the slayings, noting that the two did not engage in work that might displease influential people in Chechnya on either side of the fighting.
They said they suspected that the Chechen security services were involved, saying that after news of the kidnapping appeared on Monday night, the authorities said the two had left their offices voluntarily, indicating that security officials seemed to be aware of what happened.
«Their charitable organization was founded to help children and invalids who had lost limbs in the war, who needed psychological assistance, medicine, help from the West,» said Usam Baisayev, an official at Memorial in the North Caucasus region. «It was not one of those organizations that did investigative work or did monitoring or did anything that might upset the authorities. It is absolutely mystifying why this happened.»
Activists did note that an official of Save the Generation named Murad Muradov had been arrested and killed by the security services in 2005, after being accused of being an insurgent. But prosecutors later cleared him.
