The prosecutor’s office said police carried out eight raids at the request of a judge in the Belgian city of Mechelen. Authorities said the raids took place in Belgium’s second largest city of Antwerp, in the Borgerhout district of Antwerp and in the municipality of Ternat to the west of Brussels.
Police found no arms or explosives. However, they brought four people in for questioning.
Two of them were released but strict conditions were placed on their movements. One of the people was arrested and given an electronic tag. The fourth person was arrested and held.
The Belgian government has said some 200 Belgian fighters are still in Syria and could return to Europe to carry out terrorist acts following the Brussels and Paris attacks over the last six months.
