“Whilst we admire the way Marine Le Pen has tried to change the Front National we feel that anti-Semitism and general prejudice remains in the DNA of the party. For that reason we will not be doing a deal with the French National Front,” he said. “That will not change. It is a principle. That is why she is so angry with me.”

“These are utterances that I obviously reject and from which Miss Le Pen has distanced herself. She is the child of her father, not of his statements,” he said. “I am convinced that there’s not an inch of racism or anti-Semitism within her.”

Miss Le Pen denied that the FN was anti-Semitic and defended “the right of Israel to live in security”, though she admitted that there were disagreements between her and Mr Wilders beneath the veneer of anti-EU unity.

«Even in a marriage there are differences. We are from different countries with different histories,» she said.
