According to him, in a four-hour meeting, involving harsh and disrespectful language, security agents told him that if he continued his cooperation with Shirin Ebadi he would end up in jail, as had other attorneys. The official claimed that Ebadi had fled the country, adding, «We will expropriate all her assets.» Last year the government shut the Center for the Defense of Human Rights without any cause, but the Center has continued its work without an official office.
Mohammad Ali Dadkhah and Abdolfatah Soltani from the Center are now both in prison while Shirin Ebadi is out of the country on a lecture and scientific tour. In recent years, she, along with a small team of attorneys from the Center, has attended to about 6,000 human rights cases as a volunteer and on a pro bono basis. In recent months some Revolutionary Courts have refrained from accepting defense lawyers from the Center in law suits even though these attorneys are all bar members with valid licenses.
This court rejection has been recognized as pressure on the human rights attorneys to discourage them from continuing their human rights work. Another attorney from the Center, Ms Nasrin Sotudeh, has a court case coming up soon and must appear as a defense attorney in the hearings.
