Estlands president Toomas Hendrik Lives støttet ikke flyttingen av det sovjetiske krigsmonumentet, men det kommer ikke på tale å be russerne om unnskyldning. President George Bush sa USA støtter Estland.

Mr Ilves said Russia risked a wider trade dispute with Europe by disrupting rail transit to Estonia and with senior Russian politicians calling for a consumer boycott. Local companies report contracts cancelled by Russian customers. He said Estonia could easily weather the storm but if the pressure continued the EU would have to take reprisals. «If there are sanctions and embargoes, that would be against the EU,» he said.
