Nick Berg er den første amerikaner som blir drept med direkte henvisning til Abu Ghraib. Den 26 år gamle gutten ble drept for åpent kamera av Abu Musab al-Zarqawi selv, ifølge en islamsk webside. Zarqawi er jordaneren som settes i forbindelse med Al Qaida og Ansar al-Islam.

Berg eier en liten forretning for kommunikasjonsutstyr. Han dro til Irak for egen regning for å finne arbeid, uten hell. Han var der to ganger tidligere i år og kom tilbake, bare for å bli anholdt av amerikanerne. Moren måtte få ham ut. Han var på vei hjem da han ble tatt av terroristene.

«My name is Nick Berg, my father’s name is Michael, my mother’s name is Suzanne,» the man said on the video. «I have a brother and sister, David and Sarah. I live in … Philadelphia.»

After reading a statement, the men were seen pulling the man to his side and putting a large knife to his neck. A scream sounded as the men cut his head off, shouting «Allahu Akbar!» – «God is great.» They then held the head out before the camera.

The men in the video said the killing was revenge against abuse and humiliation carried out by US guards at Abu Ghraib prison, west of Baghdad.

«For the mothers and wives of American soldiers, we tell you that we offered the US administration to exchange this hostage with some of the detainees in Abu Ghraib and they refused,» one of the men read from a statement.

«So we tell you that the dignity of the Muslim men and women in Abu Ghraib and others is not redeemed except by blood and souls. You will not receive anything from us but coffins… (of people) slaughtered in this way.»

The video bore the title «Abu Musab al-Zarqawi shown slaughtering an American.»

På websiden er det lagt ut bildet hvor to hunder i bånd truer en irakisk fange. Det oppfordres til å hevne overgrepene med bestialsk vold.

The masked man says the abuses committed by American soldiers at Abu Ghraib prison justify the attacks by Al Qaeda.

«Does Al Qaeda need any more excuses?» the man asks. «And how does a free Muslim sleep comfortably watching Islam being slaughtered, and its dignity being drained?»

The Web site showing the video also carries a photograph of a naked Iraqi prisoner at Abu Ghraib cowering before a growling police dog.

«The shameful photos are evil humiliation for Muslim men and women in the Abu Ghraib prison,» the masked man says. «Where is the sense of honor, where is the rage? Where is the anger for God’s religion? Where is the sense of veneration for Muslims, and where is the sense of vengeance for the honor of Muslim men and women in the Crusaders prisons?»

Hvis Abu Ghraib er vestlig porno, er voldsfilmene til terroristene araberverdenens porno: de fungerer litt på samme måte: begge er triumferende. Spørsmålet er om vi greier å reagere, eller lar det fascinere oss med et gys. Det kan bli værende ikoner, i stedet for at vi beveger oss bak bildet og spør hva slags folk dette er.
