Abu Hafs al-Shahri, described as a Saudi Arabian national who was chief of operations for al-Qaeda inside Pakistan, was killed in Waziristan on Sunday, according to US officials.
The death of another senior al-Qaeda figure comes after the killing of Atiyah abd al-Rahman, the organisation’s second in command, last month
“It has been confirmed that al-Qaeda’s chief of Pakistan operations, Abu Hafs al-Shahri, was killed earlier this week in Waziristan, Pakistan,” a US official said
“Shahri’s death will further degrade al-Qaeda’s ability to recover from the death last month of al-Qaeda’s number two, Atiyah, because of his operations experience and connections within the group.
“Shahri’s death removes a key threat inside Pakistan, where he collaborated closely with the Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan to conduct coordinated attacks.”
