Den libanesiske popsangerinnen Haifa Wehbe har provosert nubierne i Egypt. I sin siste hit synger hun om "nubisk apekatt". Nå anlegger nubierne sak mot Wehbe, som ber så mye om unnskyldning.
Saken er at nubierne er en av Egypts eldste folkeslag. Likevel er de marginalisert, slik minoriteter i Egypt har lett for å bli. De teller ikke. Derfor kjennes det kanskje sårende å bli kalt "apekatt" i en populær sang, eller: nubierne har lært krenkelseskulturen av majoriteten.
Wehbe, a 35-year-old model turned actress and singer, is widely regarded as the Middle East's most prominent sex symbol and has been no stranger to controversy in the past. Her skimpy outfits and provocative lyrics (one previous hit was entitled Hey, Good Little Muslim Boy) have earned her the wrath of religious conservatives and forays into the political arena have also sparked debate, including her very public praise for Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah during the 2006 conflict between Israel and Lebanon.
The latest accusations of racism came after the release of her new song, Where is Daddy?, in which a child sings to Wehbe, "Where is my teddy bear and the Nubian monkey?".Wehbe has since apologised profusely for the offending lyrics, insisting they were penned by an Egyptian songwriter who told her that "Nubian monkey" was an innocent term for a popular children's game. That hasn't stopped a group of Nubian lawyers submitting an official complaint to Egypt's public prosecutor and calling for the song to be banned.
"Everyone is upset," said Sayed Maharous, 49, the Nubian owner of a coffee shop in Cairo. Adul Raouf Mohammed, who runs a nearby store, agreed. "To compare a human being to an animal is insulting in any culture. She has denigrated an entire community of people, and now some of our children are afraid to go into school because they know they will be called monkeys in the playground."

The commission’s visa-liberalization program for the Western Balkans recommends a visa-free regime for Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia, but excludes Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo. As both Croats and Serbs in Bosnia have dual citizenships and will benefit from the easing of visa restrictions, Bosnian Muslims are practically left outside of this regime, with the commission citing technical difficulties and a lack of progress in the issuance of secure passports in Bosnia. The move triggered a strong reaction from Turkey as well from some EU member states.

On October 31, I watched history unfold as Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, flanked by the Turkish and Iraqi Kurdish flags, gave a joint press conference with Massoud Barzani, the president of the Kurdistan regional government, and delivered messages of friendship and peace.
“Erbil feels like home,” a beaming Davutoğlu declared of the Iraqi Kurdish capital. His words were instantly translated into Kurdish.
Until recently it would have been unthinkable for any Turkish official to be caught on camera anywhere near a Kurdish flag. Never mind that Iraq’s central government recognizes the federal status accorded to the country’s Kurds under its popularly legislated constitution—Turkey has long insisted on calling the region “Northern Iraq.”
